Freya the Walrus: Killed by a Government

by AM Bakir.

Freya was a sentient friend we couldn’t protect from government cruelty.

Norway has obviously forgotten that “when there is a will, there is a way”, especially when the life of a sentient being is at stake. It was reported that Freya the walrus was also seen in UK, Dutch, Danish and Swedish waters, not just Norway. The world loved her; her appearances put a smile on many faces and brightened many hearts. She was a symbol of love, hope and joy.

Did you know that in 2009, Norway passed the Animal Welfare Act? Its Article 1 states: “The intention of this Act is to promote good animal welfare and respect for animals.” On top of that, walruses are listed as vulnerable by the International Union for Conservation of Nature’s Red List of Threatened Species. Yet Norway chose to kill Freya; a young female walrus.

It is also important to mention that it was reported that swimmers got very close to Freya in her final days, some even taking selfies, but no injuries were reported.

By killing Freya, Norwegian government officials proved that they are not willing to do their best to protect and preserve animal life. The names of the heartless people who suggested and approved this decision must be shared with the public. These decision-makers must be removed from their roles. Individuals who choose such barbaric actions should be banned from taking any decisions regarding animals; they should not be allowed near any animal ever again.

Their department must be investigated. Who (individuals or boat owners) were complaining or claiming that Freya was a major threat to human life? How many international animal rescue organizations did the Norwegian government contact or seek help from before deciding to kill Freya? Animals are sentient beings; as humans, it is our duty to govern their welfare.

Norwegian government officials did not only kill Freya ; they killed a symbol of love, hope and joy. Shame on you, Norway.

Let her story remind us what must never happen again
